We are still a month away for an official declaration of iPhone 7 but most of news and leaks has already declared it as a disappointment. It is not going to save Apple from declining sales.
I own a iPhone 6 Plus and keenly following all the news around iPhone 7.
Considering my iPhone 6 Plus is around 2 years old, I have to make a choice if its worth upgrading to iPhone 7.
So is it really going to be a disappointment?
iPhone 7 Expected Specs:
iPhone 7 is supposed to retain the similar shape and design of iPhone 6S, which intern is similar to iPhone 6. So if that happens, it will be 3rd year when iPhone will be released with similar design.
There are only some subtle changes like redesigned antenna bands to give a clear back etc.
This is an year where people would expect design changes but looks like Apple is saving them for the 10th Anniversary. So if you would just like to upgrade for new design, you will be disappointed.
My guess, very few people will be in this category. Most of the people will look for other capabilities also along with design changes. So it will be a factor but will not determine the fate of iPhone 7 alone.
The only other rumoured change is addition of new space black color, similar to Apple Watch.
iPhone 7 Plus also might get the smart connecter similar to iPad Pro, though the usage of the same is not clear. This rumour has been contradicted also in past, so we need to wait till iPhone 7 announcement.
The biggest and most controversial change in design is removal of 3.5mm audio jack.
iPhone 7 will move to lightning based headphone jack and will replace the audio jack with dual speaker setup.
Many people are asking to keep the audio jack but I am not so keep on sticking to older technologies. We also need to see what it brings in terms of improvements.
Going to lightening based headphone connector will allow apple to improve the audio quality by going digital from analog.
They can go for HD audio with lightning based headphones and I think this is the first step towards that.
Once you get over initial resistance towards change, you will be able to enjoy the better quality sound.
Looks like iPhone camera is in for a decent upgrade. Most of the initial leaks have shown bigger bump on the back of iPhone 7, which is an indication of bigger lens.
iPhone 7 Plus will have dual camera setup and might have two 12MP camera on the back.
Most of the leaks only talks about the setup, but no-one is sure about the software. Some companies like HTC, LG has already tried their hand on the dual camera setup and it will be interesting to see Apple’s take on this.
Remember Apple is not famous for providing greatest hardware.
They are famous for providing great packages, which can utilise the provided hardware with great effect. So in Apple’s ecosystem software plays a great part.
Samsung has made some good leaps in last few years in terms of Camera, their latest offering Galaxy Note 7 camera is almost equal or better (in low lights) than iPhone 6S camera.
iPhone has always been the leader in this segment and I am expecting some good software improvements along with dual camera setup to retain that leading position.
I don’t think people will be disappointed in this area from iPhone 7.
Processor and RAM
If previous years are anything to go by, iPhone 7 will get a new A10 Processor. Apple has always increased the number along with internal specs.
This year processor is supposed to keep the dual-core architecture along with speed bumps with 16nm FinFET process from TSMC.
Initial benchmarks suggest that it will be more powerful than A9X chip, which is used in iPad Pro.
iPhone 6S has got RAM upgrade with 2GB on board, so we should not expect much anything this year. But looks like we are in some treat this year, as iPhone 7 Plus is rumored to get a bump to 3GB.
More RAM is needed to use the dual camera setup effectively, but this will boost the performance of all other apps on iPhone 7 Plus.
Though most of the other competitor has already moved to quad-core or octa-core architecture, Apple is still sticking to dual-core.
If you have used iOS before, you would know that it has never been an issue. iPhone has always been able to complete with those chips because of the optimised software.
iPhone 7 should also be same and will be able to take any competitor phone with ease. I don’t think any one will be disappointed with the power under the hood.
There are some weak rumors of display upgrades in iPhone 7, but I do not have much hopes. We might end up seeing the same display resolution.
Apple is use to transition newer feature across the lineups, so we might see some new features like True tone display.
Most of the other phones have moved to Quad HD OLED panels and iPhone sticking to 1080p LCD panels might disappoint some people.
Looks like OLED panel transition is reserved for 10th Anniversary addition next year.
This is another area where the initial rumors are good. Base storage will be upgraded to 32GB from 16GB, which is a welcome addition.
Most of the other competitors have already moved to 64GB base additions and some are providing SD Card access along with it.
There is good news if you are looking for middle and top addition, they will also be upgraded to 128GB and 256GB respectively.
This makes the middle addition a much lucrative option with 128GB storage option. Most people will be happy with this change.
iPhone is nothing without mentioning iOS and iOS 10 is one of the big feature rich release.
iMessage is getting a much needed revamp sticker with third party integrations, Apple watch hand-writing mode, Screen animations, invisible ink and much more.
Maps are also getting a lot of third party integration, now you should be able to take action right from the map screen itself.
New Home icon to manage your smart home and its integration with control center.
Siri also has an API where third party apps can integrate. You will be able to tell Siri to send WhatsApp message or make Vonage call in iOS 10.
Lot of other enhancements like Raise to wake, notification redesign, Widget screen access from lock screen, control center redesign, music redesign are part of this upgrade.
This will be released along with iPhone 7 but you will still be able to get iOS 10, if you have any device iPhone 5 onwards.
Apple always introduces some features specific to the new device, like 3D touch last year.
This year it might be some Camera specific features as they have done some significant hardware upgrade in that area.
So most of the people will be happy in terms of Camera, Storage, Processor and RAM upgrades and iOS 10. It’s the design and display, which may leave you to want more.
Most of the upgrades are internal, which can be termed as incremental. Still in terms of performance it should be a decent upgrade from iPhone 6.
iPhone 6S owners may want to skip this year cycle as it will not be much improvement over it.
