Google has just announced Android Beta Program, which is a formal avenue to signup and test the beta builds of Android.
Along with the Android Beta Program, Google has also released a first developer preview of Android N (Next version of Android).
Android N Developer Preview is available on certain nexus devices and has some long awaited features build directly into Android.
New features available with Android N
Android N has added multi-window support. It will allow to open 2 apps either side by side or one-above-another.
Side by side is available in landscape mode and one-above-another will be used in portrait mode. The multi app window can be resized by dragging the divider up and down.
You can drag the divider all the way up to come out of multi-window mode.
Recent app button will be the driver for the multi-window mode. Long press on recent app button will toggle the multi window mode.
Currently there is no support for sharing content between both the apps. Hopefully that will be added as we go along.
It also support picture in picture for Android TV, which will allow users to watch content while interacting with other apps.
Notifications has gone under a lot of changes. Now they are bundled based on the app and you will have group actions.
In a first look, bundled notification can look like a bit more clutter but I am guessing slowly we will get used to it. That doesn’t mean that they do not need any modification. Layout needs some improvement as depending on the apps, sometimes it very hard to understand the notifications.
The layout has also changes and they are now full screen and much more integrated with the system.
Notification also have direct reply, which can be utilised by communication apps like WhatsApp, Hangouts or Facebook messenger. It allows you to directly reply from the notification whether you are on lock screen or notification panel.
Android N also overhauled the Quick notification panel. Now quick notification has paginated display, which can be personalised based on what you want to display and in what order.
There is a edit button, which will allow to reorder or hide the setting in Quick Settings. It is similar to what you would have seen on CM13.
There are under the hood optimisation to Doze feature. Now it even work when your phone are not in use and sitting in your pocket.
Earlier it use to work only when it was laying stationary on the desk, but this optimisation should mean that we will get more from the same hardware we have.
Display Size (DPI Changes)
This is one of the good enhancement. Now you can change the size of your content without needing a root.
Now Display size is available under Accessibility settings. You can just drag the slider to increase or decrease the size of the content.
These are some of the important feature available with Android N Developer Preview. You can watch the video for the detail overview of the Android N.
